moving checklist
Moving to a new home is very exciting but can also be a little overwhelming. The following tips are being provided to help make your transition a little smoother.
One Month Before Moving
  • Fill out a change of address form for the post office
  • Schedule a moving company or reserve a rental truck
  • If moving yourself:
    • Obtain boxes and other moving supplies
    • Start packing items infrequently used (see packing tips below)
    • Arrange for help on moving day
  • If moving from out of town:
    • Make any necessary travel arrangements with airlines, car rental agencies and hotels
    • Obtain medical and dental records, x-rays and prescription histories. Ask doctor or dentist for referrals and transfer prescriptions
  • Transfer memberships in churches, clubs and civic organizations
  • Contact your insurance agent to be sure you’ll have proper coverage during and after your move. Your agent may have questions about your new home such as proximity to the fire station; we’d be happy to provide those answers for you
  • Set up a checking account in your new city
  • Start using up food items so there is less to pack or throw away
One To Two Weeks before Moving
  • Switch or arrange for utility services at your new address
  • Fill out IRS change of address forms with your employer
  • Confirm travel reservations
  • Close bank accounts and have your funds wired to your new bank. Collect valuables from your safety deposit box
  • Notify friends, family etc. of your new address
  • Confirm moving help
After Moving In
  • Change the address on your Driver’s License
  • The rental office would be happy to help you locate local businesses and attractions, do not hesitate to ask for referrals, directions etc.
Packing tips
  • Start packing early prioritizing the need for items to remain unpacked
  • Keep the following supplies handy for packing (Do not underestimate the amount of supplies you will need):
    • Boxes
    • Marking pens
    • Bubble wrap
    • Newspaper
    • Tissue
    • Packing tape
    • Scissors
  • Use strong boxes and containers that can be secured tightly. Special boxes for dishes, clothing and other special items can be purchased
  • Protect fragile contents with the packing materials listed above. Save room by wrapping breakables in towels and blankets
  • If possible pack audio-video equipment in their original boxes. Label cables and tighten transit screws. If removing screws, tape them to the objects they were removed from
  • Avoid loading more weight into one box than can be carried without risk of damage or injury
  • Label each box indicating the contents (be specific or keep a separate inventory sheet) which room it should go in, whether it is fragile and in what order it should be loaded into the truck
  • Consult a florist or plant book for the proper moving of plants
  • Double check closets, drawers, shelves etc. to be sure they are empty
